Hello, it’s Laura and Rachel. We know it’s been a rather long time since you heard anything from us as mooi but we found this old live recording and thought it wasn’t such a bad idea to share it. We’re still the best of friends but life won’t allow either of us the time enough to make a new studio recording. Rach has a family, a business and a homestead to run and Laura is away at University in Brighton.

    Laura’s words…

We first met at college in 1995, Rachel was 18 and I was just 15. As we were studying performing arts it wasn’t long before we sang together. We realised early on we had a rapport and before the 2 year course was over we’d formed a band. Our first demo was made in a garage on a 4-track and distributed on cassette. Seems like a life-time ago. 5 years later, we left that band to form mooi. As I recall, Rach found the word ‘mooi’ in a big old dictionary, right next to ‘moon’. It’s an Afrikaans word meaning ‘nice’. We played and enjoyed so many shows over the following 5 years, big and small, weird and wonderful. Met so many kind people and were given a million compliments by them. Unfortunately, life got in the way after 10 years of singing together week-in week-out, we went our separate ways before our first full studio album was complete. We recorded a few times, but the album we left unfinished in 2005 has now, sadly, been lost forever, on an obsolete hard-drive buried in a garage somewhere. Some versions of those recordings do exist in a very small circle of friends and family, and of course there’s ‘Sway’ that still gets streamed to this day.

About a year ago we discovered this Live recording of a show we played at Central Station in Wrexham in 2004. And we actually really enjoyed hearing it and we thought you might too. So here we are. We know it’s not perfect and we took all of the chat in-between songs out because cringe. Evidently we’d had a busy week and we did go on a bit about a bad show that we’d played, so to save any embarrassment we chose to edit it out. We also faded track 8 ‘Tara’ because we ended it with a portion of another song which we don’t own the copyright for. We’d like to thank Matt Nicholls for his Rhodes skills and big-up Huw McGregor on Cello. Thanks also to ‘Jeff’ who was our sound-man that night, and our support acts Andrew Salomon and Elin Fflur.

And our deepest, heartfelt thanks to you all, for listening and hearing us, now, and then.
